Corundum
“Corundum” — A World of Extraordinary Colors Beyond the Ordinary
Among the most treasured minerals in the world of gemstones, corundum stands out for its exceptional hardness, brilliance, and remarkable color diversity. Cherished by artisans, collectors, and traders alike, its color alone determines not only its name but also its value. When corundum appears in red, it is known as ruby; in blue, it becomes sapphire. Even a subtle variation in hue can significantly influence a gem’s market price.
To establish a unified and transparent standard for color assessment, the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) has developed the “GIT Standard Color Reference for Corundum.”
This color grading system provides a reliable benchmark for gemstone identification and certification — ensuring accuracy, consistency, and global confidence in the Thai gem and jewelry industry.
Below are four of the most sought-after hues that showcase the timeless beauty and individuality of corundum:
Ruby (Red Corundum)
- Pigeon’s Blood Ruby – The most prized and valuable shade, featuring a pure, vivid deep red with a hint of fluorescence. Rare and highly sought after in the international market.
เป็นเฉดที่หายากและเป็นที่ต้องการสูง - Rabbit’s Eye Ruby – Red color, and pinkish-red
introduced by GIT as a new color reference to honor Chanthaburi, the “City of Gems” and one of the world’s leading ruby trading centers.
Sapphire (Blue Corundum)
- Royal Blue Sapphire – Exhibiting a rich, intense
— neither purplish nor greenish — this tone is universally recognized as the most prestigious and desirable among blue sapphires. - Cornflower Blue Sapphire – A velvety, vivid blue
with a delicate purplish tint caused by fine inclusions that enhance its luminous, silky appearance.
